England’s hopes of turning a corner in Test cricket following a humiliating defeat at the hands of Australia in the 2021/22 Ashes series got off to the worst possible start as they lost four wickets in the first session of play in the opening Test match. The English top-order which has been a cause of concern for a long while once again disappointed after skipper Joe Root won the toss and elected to bat first at Antigua’s Sir Vivian Richards Stadium.
The visitors gave Alex Lees a debut but the opening batter was trapped in front of his stumps by Kemar Roach for just four runs. Lees’ opening partner Zack Crawley departed shortly after as Jayden Seales forced an edge of his bat after adding just 8 runs on the scorecard.
Skipper Joe Root walked into bat in his new number three position but the move terribly backfired on him as he could not make 13 runs. Root was dismissed through a peacher of a delivery by Roach which he had no answers too. Ex-captain Jason Holder also got in the act by dismissing Dan Lawrence for a score of 20.
England’s collapse left their fans frustrated as an age-old problem once again came to haunt them. Root & Co. forgettable start to the series led to cricket fans giving some hilarious reactions on social media.
